Columbian Flower Trade May be Experiencing an American Drought

Tue, 24 Jan 2012

Most of us may buy flowers a couple of times a year.

Do you consider where the flowers in the florists are from?

The flower industry is dominated by just a handful of countries: 83% of the world's cut flowers are from Holland, Colombia, Ecuador and Kenya.

Germany, the UK, the US, Holland and France import nearly three quarters of the cut-flower production.

Chances are the roses you buy for Valentines Day or Mothers Day come from Colombia.

Flowers are Colombia's second main agriculture export, with distribution to 89 countries, rendering the country the number two international exporter.

Similar to the coffee industry, Colombian flower producers are party to the growers associations. The companies are split between two organisations. Asocolflores represents the big flower exporters, with Fedeflores representing the medium- to small-sized Colombian-owned farms.
