Churches Tried to have a Green Christmas

Wed, 04 Jan 2012

UK Churches have tried to have a "green" Christmas .

Over the festive period churches up and down the country have tried to be environmentally friendly.

Early December saw St. Luke’s, a Catholic church in the London suburb of Pinner, switching on its solar panels .

Furthermore, the Anglican dioceses of Bath, Exeter, Gloucester and Wells started an ambitious project which provides "green" electricity for the majority of their 300 churches, 200 schools, as well as other institutions.

Practical Christmas suggestions have included decorating churches by utilising nearby greenery as opposed to visiting the florists, creating home-made decorations as well as gifts, and lighting candles as opposed to electric lights.

Kentish Town based Climate Justice group at Our Lady Help of Christians sold a book of vegetarian recipes which it had collected from parishioners. "It’s much better for the environment not to eat meat, and the proceeds are going to support a community."
