Florists Mistletoe Sales Unaffected By Harsh Winter Weather

Florists in Scarborough have reported that sales of the traditional mistletoe plant have remained as strong as ever this year, despite the freezing weather conditions.

Claire Wilson, of Blooms in Victoria Road, who sourced their mistletoe locally, said unlike other retailers across town, mistletoe sales had not been affected by the snow in the run-up to Christmas and it still remains a very popular choice.

She said: "Everyone is buying mistletoe this week, there is no particular type of person, young or old, everyone is enjoying it."

"People who come in to buy some flowers will also buy some mistletoe, and we have displayed some on the shop front so people who have noticed it when they walk by are coming in to buy some specially."

Dawn Readman, of Floristic Experience in Westborough, commented: "Mistletoe has been a popular choice of couples and has been in demand for our customers for years."

"It is mainly younger couples and older customers buying it for romance around Christmas time."

The history of Mistletoe as a Christmas tradition goes back to 18th century England.

The story goes that a ‘kissing ball’ was created from mistletoe and it was said that if a young lady stood underneath the mistletoe ball at Christmas, she could not refuse to be kissed. If the girl remained unkissed, she could expect to remain unmarried for the following year.
