A record number of roses were transported into the UK ahead of Valentines Day as demand for the popular flower soared.

Virgin Atlantic was one the many airlines that helped with the transportation. It revealed that red, yellow, pink and white roses arrived in London "in abundance" during the first weeks of February.

The British air carrier alone delivered more than 15 tonnes of flowers to the UK from Kenya, an increase of 44 per cent from last year.

John Lloyd, the carrier's cargo director, said: "It's reassuring to know that even in these tough times, romance is still alive and well in the UK."

"Although the red rose is definitely the flower of choice for the romantic British male this year, we are also seeing large quantities of chrysanthemums from Cape Town and carnations from the US arriving into the country."

According to reports, Kenyan roses made up a third of the blooms stocked in-store and online this Valentines .
