A Sunderland-based florist is celebrating after being recognised as one of the top flower retailers in the UK.

Watters Florist in Cleadon Village has been accepted in the Good Florist Guide (GFG) – the online directory of the finest floral shops in Britain.

The prestigious accolade is only awarded to florists who really make the grade and allow customers to feel a level of confidence that they are buying from the best.

Watters Florist is owned by 50-year-old Jan Watters and her husband Cameron, who quit his role as a high-flying business development manager to help his wife with the day-to-day running of the business.

"We are delighted to be accepted into the Good Florist Guide," said Jan. "We are passionate about flowers, design, quality and the service we give to each of our customers so it is wonderful to have this recognised."

Cameron, who holds a City and Guilds NVQ level 2 in floristry qualification, said: "The shop has been running since 2005 and it was always the intention that when it was financially viable, I would leave my work and join Jan in the business."

He added that despite the diverse change in his career, real men should not be put off by the prospect of working with flowers .

"The predominant gender of florists in most other countries is male, a very high percentage of florists in Holland are male and a lot of the Dutch designers are male," he commented.
