Edible Flowers Hit Supermarket Shelves

Thu, 21 Apr 2011

Edible flowers have gone on sale in supermarket stores this week in response to growing consumer demand.

Upmarket grocer Waitrose has added mauve-coloured Violas and yellow Nasturtiums to its bagged salad counters as part of its new Finishing Touches range of salad ingredients.

The retailer says the once-popular English garden ingredients can be scattered on fresh salads or added to cocktails, desserts and cakes. The Violas have a very mild flavour while the yellow Nasturtiums provide a slight peppery taste.

Rhonwen Cunningham, Waitrose Salad Buyer, comments: "Edible flowers are not just for decoration, they also have a lovely subtle taste."

"They were a popular food a few hundred years ago and we’re now seeing a renewed interest in eating these traditional English garden ingredients."

Top celebrity chefs including Heston Blumenthal have helped revive interest in edible flowers by regularly including them when creating their Masterchef dishes.

Dandelion and amaranth leaves and hogweed were recently on the menu at London Michelin-starred restaurants Helene Darroze at The Connaught and Hibiscus.
