The city of Salisbury has been awarded for its floral displays in the 2010 South and South East in Bloom Competition.

The displays, which are managed and maintained by Salisbury City Council, received a silver award in the city centre category of the annual contest, which is the part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s national Britain in Bloom competition.

Salisbury’s summer flower displays were judged against a wide range of criteria, including the quality and originality of their planting.

Judges also toured the city’s parks and open spaces and took in the views from Queen Elizabeth Gardens .

Senior Parks Officer Chris Stringer said: "So many people are involved in making our city look its best each summer, from the businesses and shops that sponsor our flowers to the voluntary groups that help look after our green spaces – this award is a testament to them."

The overall winner of the RHS 2010 Britain in Bloom Awards was Falkland in Scotland which saw off competition from fellow Scottish team Pitlochry to retain its Champion of Champions crown.

More than 1,100 communities across the UK participated in this year’s event, with 66 finalists chosen to represent their region/nation in the finals.
