Flower lovers from across the UK gathered in York on Sunday for the Ancient Society of York Florists final show of the year.

The society, which is the oldest horticultural society in the world, staged its annual autumn show at Askham Bryan College, with exhibitors arriving from across the county to show off their expertise in the floral world.

The college gymnasium was transformed into the base for the event, which included displays of dahlias, chrysanthemums and gladioli as well as other flowers, while another section was devoted to vegetables .

Prizes for the best entrants were presented by the Lord Mayor of York, Coun Sue Galloway, continuing a tradition dating back to the Ancient Society of York Florists first-ever show more than 240 years ago.

Another popular horticultural event - Pocklington Chrysanthenum Show - took place on the weekend.

The annual show, which was held at Burnby, East Yorkshire, on Saturday, showcased a number of horticultural attractions including floral art, photographs and handicrafts.
