Floral Art Group Aiming To Impress RHS Judges At Chelsea Flower Show

Tue, 30 Nov 2010

A group of flower arranging enthusiasts from the North West of England are hoping to impress judges at next year’s Chelsea Flower Show with their floral art .

Members of the North West branch of the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies (Nafas) are working on a 20-foot tall hand-crafted tree, adorned with flowers, as their centre piece for their entry into the prestigious annual flower show which takes place in May.

They hope their eye-catching creation, entitled Wood Yew Waste, will catch the judges’ imagination.

Member Ann Coulton, who runs a florist shop in Longton, said: "Our brief is floral design . We wanted to do something different and use a recycling theme."

"On the banks of the River (Ribble), there is lot’s of driftwood and with the help of farmers and their tractors, we rescued large pieces. It will very much be a fantasy tree."

She added: "A lot of our membership is older people but we do have younger members. It’s a lovely therapeutic hobby."

To mark the branch’s 50th anniversary, a charity calendar starring eight of its male demonstrators has been put together and is available to buy online from flowersnorthwest.net. The calendar costs £5.
