Fake Flowers Soaring In Popularity At Debenhams

Debenhams has reported a huge rise in sales of artificial flowers at its UK department stores .

The company said many shoppers were opting for fake flowers over the real thing to help solve their hayfever problems.

Hayfever is caused by the circulation of the pollen released by fresh flowers, which can irritate the sinuses. As a result, many people are turning to fake, pollen-free blooms to brighten up their homes.

Steve Lightfoot, trading director for Home at Debenhams, said artificial flowers are "perfect for people who want to have the joy and beauty of freshly cut flowers in their home, without the expense or the sniffles".

"Our fake flowers are virtually identical to perfect blooms found in only in the very best florists," he added.

"The subtle colouring of the petals and the detail of each bloom are identical, and some artificial flowers are even incorporating tiny slug-sized bites into their designs to create an even more natural feel."

He continued: "With hayfever affecting over 12 million people in the UK alone, it's no surprise that we have seen an incredible 92 per cent rise in sales of our Grey Rose by Jane Packer range."

Debenhams' biggest sellers so far this year have been the cymbidium arrangement, followed by a red amaryllis with berries, red tulips in a bud vase and the hydrangea in glass bowl.
