The majority of Britain’s garden enthusiasts plan on spending the same or more on gardening this summer, according to a new study.
A survey carried out Ipsos Mori for the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) found that 76 per cent of respondents intend to spend the same or more this year on gardening products .
The HTA said the findings suggest that the British weather is a significantly larger factor in the garden trade than the on-going recession .
HTA director-general David Gwyther commented: "This latest research is very encouraging for the garden industry, which has traditionally fared better than the high street during recessionary times."
"The data shows that people will continue to both work and relax in their gardens and significantly for the sector - continue to spend on garden products with many increasing their spend this year."
According to the survey, consumers aged 25-34 are most likely to increase the amount of money they spend on such items, with 37 per cent saying they will buy more products in the coming months.
In addition, the same age group is also likely to increase the amount of time spent in their gardens, with 44 per cent of respondents saying they would spend more time working on their garden, and 42 per cent stating they would use their backyards more for entertaining and relaxing.
Gwyther added: "Several of our garden centre members have reported that more young people are visiting their outlets. This has to be a key target group for garden retailers and we must all work hard to ensure that they get a great experience and return in the future."
