Organisers of the 2009 Battle of Flowers event in Guernsey are being forced to look outside of the Channel Islands for their favourite flowers, it has been revealed.
Event co-ordinator Ruth Mahy said that it was no longer possible to source the flowers they needed for the event from within the islands due to a lack of supply.
"The aster grower in Jersey has decided to stop growing, so now we have to order them from Holland," she explained.
The flowers will now have to be shipped from Holland to the UK before being brought to Guernsey for the two-day event, starting on August 26th.
This year’s float designers have been advised to order to their flowers as soon as possible because of the long distances they will have to travel.
"Islanders have been able to order up until two weeks before the battle in previous years, but now the deadline is much closer," Mrs Mahy added.
The Battle of Flowers is a classic Guernsey island event, where locals compete to win the prestigious "Prix D’Honneur" award for the best mobile floral float.
