Rising Interest In Wildlife Gardening

Tue, 31 Mar 2009

Wildlife gardening is set to become more popular among Britain’s gardeners, according to a leading member of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

Speaking ahead of the RHS Greener Gardening Show in London, Alex Baulkwill, manager of the Chelsea Flower Show, said he expects wildlife gardening to be a big trend in the garden designs at this year’s flower event, and also expects it to attract increasing consumer interest over the next few years.

Baulkwill compared the growing trend the Grow Your Own category, which has proven very popular at Chelsea for the past four years and has more recently become an important category for garden centres .

" Wildlife gardening is already popular, but I expect it will attract increasing interest in the coming years," he commented.

"The diversity of plants in gardens is vital for wildlife and catching a glimpse of a hedgehog or watching birds adds to the joy of gardening ."

"Simple things like thinking about some of the plants you include in your garden, such as Echium for bees, or including an insect house can make a difference."
