Florists Send Boxes Of Treats To Troops In Afghanistan

Wed, 04 Mar 2009

British soldiers in Afghanistan have received thousands of morale-boosting treats from a pair of Ipswich florists .

Sally Brame and Jayne Smith, of Cottage Garden Florists, began sending parcels containing various useful items to members of 2 Para in November 2007, and have so far successfully sent more than 3,000 goody boxes.

One soldier responded by sending the flower shop owners his desert combat jacket and boots as a token of appreciation for the gifts .

The pair have been helped in their efforts to raise funds for goodies such as sweets and soap bars by Ipswich resident Mary Packham, whose son is fighting in Afghanistan.

She was so impressed with the idea that she gave up her own time to collect money outside Sainsbury's in Warren Heath.

Mrs Brame said: "We sent Mary's son a few boxes so she helped us collect. She had previously read about what we were doing in the paper and thought it was nice. It was lovely for her to see the public's support for our troops."

"They deserve our help and we will continue to help for as long as they are out there," she added.
