Liverpool Florist Named Young Chelsea Florist Of The Year

A young florist from Liverpool has returned home from the 2009 Chelsea Flower Show as holder of the event’s Young Florist of the Year accolade.

Joe Massie, 21, creative director at city centre florist Fishlocks, was awarded the title and a gold medal after seeing off competition from more than 400 entrants at the prestigious show, held last month.

The Liverpudlian wowed this year’s judges with his flamboyant lady’s hat, which was designed using an eye-catching array of pink, purple and gold orchids .

Joe commented: "It was an extravagant creation which took more than 30 hours to produce and was even put to the test by judges for ‘wearability’."

"As you can imagine, the standard of entries was very high but to win it was unbelievable. I can’t thank the Fishlocks team enough for nurturing me this far.

"The first thing I’ll do when I get back this week is give them all a big hug, then it will be business as usual."

Joe has been learning his trade at Fishlocks for the past three years and has since managed to scoop the Young Florist of the Year title from the 2007 British Florist Association Awards and the Interflora Florist of the Future 2009 accolade.

Commenting on Joe’s success, Richard Moore, owner of the 110-year-old flower shop, said: "Joe has once again done the Fishlocks brand proud. It’s an immense privilege for Fishlocks to win a Gold Medal at Chelsea and another incredible accolade for Joe."

"I’m sure it’s gratifying for our customers to know that they are being looked after by the best, while, at the same time, feeling reassured that nobody at Fishlocks will get carried away with this."
