An east midlands florist company has received a huge cash injection to help it take on some of the largest floristry networks.
Flowers by Florists, based at based at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, has secured £168,000 of investment from a series of support funds, set up to help promising businesses develop, and private backers.
The company operates in a similar way to more established names such as Interflora and Flowers Direct by acting as a network for independent florists, but aims to beat the big names by charging a flat fee instead of a percentage on every order.
John Butterworth, managing director of the company, said the network already has 170 florists across the country and plans to add a further 300.
"This is currently something of a 'virtual' business, running on technology systems and we have only needed to employ five people to date," he commented.
"However, we now need to develop the customer care side and I imagine we would be up to around 10 or 12 employees within a year to deliver this."
