Dutch Flower Market Battles On Through Economic Gloom

Tue, 06 Jan 2009

The global economic crisis has had a limited effect on flower and plant producers in the Netherlands, latest figures have revealed.

According to the FloraHolland, the world's largest flower auction house, growth in 2008 fell from a projected 2.7 per cent to 0.25 per cent as a result of the global economic downturn .

However, the company saw turnover exceed 4 billion euros as it traded 12.4 billion plants and flowers, representing an increase of 1.3 per cent on trade in 2007.

In a company statement, FloraHolland said it hopes for turnover growth of 1.0 per cent in 2009 as many people are choosing to brighten their homes with colourful flowers or plants in these "economically challenging times".

The Netherlands is the world's largest flower exporter, selling more than one billion tulip bulbs every year.
