Trainee Florist Scoops Top Prize At RHS Show Tatton Park

A college student from Wales has been named as one of Britain’s most skilled trainee florists .

Charlotte Cooks, from Abergavenny, South Wales, won a UK Skills floristry competition for trainees with more than two years’ experience at the recent RHS Tatton Park Flower Show .

The 22-year-old is currently training for her level three NVQ in floristry at Coleg Gwent’s Usk College and also works part-time at her mother’s flower shop .

Miss Cooks said she was honoured to come first at the prestigious event.

"All the hours spent in my mum’s shop fine-tuning my skills have been worth it," she commented. "I’ve learned so much and taking part has helped boost my confidence and knowledge and will help my career ."

Miss Cooks is now hoping to be given the opportunity to become part of the UK Skills Team and showcase her talents at the world’s largest skills competition, WorldSkills, which will be held in London in 2011.

The biennial four-day tournament involves teams from 51 countries competing in more than 40 vocational skills categories, including web design, engineering and floristry .

This year’s event, which is being held next month in Calgary, Canada, is expected to attract over 200,000 spectators from across the globe.
