The 2nd International Flower Festival held at Loreto House, Londonderry, Ireland, has proved a massive success with an unprecedented number of people visiting the exhibition since its launch last Thursday.
The world-class floral extravaganza has seen gardening and flower enthusiasts from all over the country take advantage of the chance to see original designs by some of the leading florists from the UK and Japan .
Evelen Hallahan, director of Loreto House, said the great weather had helped add to the number of visitors. "We've had huge numbers coming through the house with between 500-600 people on Sunday alone," she commented.
Hallahan paid tribute to all the volunteers who made the event possible and labelled it as a "wonderful community effort".
"It's all thanks to a very hard working committee of ten who have been meeting on a regular basis to organise this since last September, under the direction of Michael Doherty," she said.
"Then, for last fortnight, a huge contingent of local volunteers from the community have been busy cleaning the house, cutting the grass and preparing the grounds, and during the last four days, they've been serving tea, feeding people, supervising traffic and parking, and running the whole show for me."
The festival has proven to be a welcome boon for the towns tourism industry, with restaurants and accommodation providers welcoming visitors from as far away as Mayo, Galway, Cork, Navan and Dublin .
