A florist in Norfolk has caused fury amongst members of the public after its owners painted their shop fluorescent pink in protest over an order to brighten up.
Both Christine Lathrope and her husband Dennis, owners of Amity's Florist in Mere Street, Diss, have received abuse after deciding to respond to a letter received from Diss Town Council about its Clean Up Diss campaign by painting the shop temporarily to raise money for charity .
As a result Mrs Lathrope said her and her husband have been shouted and sworn at, while others have even accused the shop owners of "ruining the historic market town" .
The campaign asks businesses to do their bit by cleaning their shop fronts and providing interesting and lively shop window displays.
Diss Town Council clerk Deborah Sarson said the letter was not meant to upset traders and said it wanted everybody to acknowledge that it takes a combined effort to make a difference."
The owners placed two buckets outside the florist to collect donations for Cancer Research UK one marked Keep It Pink, for those in support of the colour change, and the other labelled See It Go, for people who dislike the vivid shade.
But Tony Palmer, a South Norfolk district councillor for Diss, said: "While I think everyone would applaud the reasons for drawing attention to their collection for a cancer charity, the shop is a Grade II listed building in a conservation area."
"The district council has asked that the shop be painted an alternative colour, to be agreed with the conservation architect," he added.
