The starling is the most common bird in London gardens, a new RSPB survey has revealed.
Residents participating in the study counted an average of 3.14 starlings in each of the 13,848 Greater London gardens – down from last year’s average of 3.65.
The London findings were part of the RSPB’s annual national ‘Big Garden Birdwatch ’ survey, which encourages people to count the number of birds in their local gardens .
The results enable the RSPB to understand more about the population trends of UK garden birds and to prioritise its bird conservation work appropriately.
A spokesman for the RSPB said the group was concerned at the continuing fall in the number of starlings and house sparrows.
"These are our most common birds but they're vanishing, mostly as a result of lack of food and shelter," he said.
The RSPB spokesman added that bird species could be maintained by growing plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife.
Over 20,000 people took part in the London survey, which took place on 26 and 27 January, helping to identify more than 36 different species of bird .
The capital’s second most common species was found to be the house sparrow, with 2.63 per garden, followed by the wood pigeon in third place at 2.38. Bottom of the top-ten list was the collared dove with 0.90 per garden .
