Well Maintained Beer Gardens Crucial For Business

Wed, 19 Mar 2008

Well designed beer gardens that feature good quality furniture are vital to boost trade, according to a new study .

A survey of 1,005 Pub-goers, carried out by woodcare products manufacturer Ronseal, found that 71 per cent of people view beer gardens as an important part of British culture.

Half of the people polled said they believe a beer garden is an essential element of a decent pub, with more than a third stating they would take their business elsewhere if the beer garden was not to their liking.

The findings also revealed that many believed last summer’s bad weather and the recent storms have left many beer gardens in dire need of attention.

The introduction of the smoking ban has also had its effects on the beer garden, with eighty five per cent saying there has been an upsurge in makeshift and shoddy beer gardens as owners rush to provide smoking solutions for their customers.

Ronseal’s marketing director, James Smith, said: "Our beer gardens have taken a real battering over the last 12 months from the great British weather and many are looking a little neglected.

"Our research has shown how important a smart and attractive beer garden is to pub customers."

In keeping with the theme, Ronseal has launched a new competition - in partnership with gardening celebrity Charlie Dimmock - to find beer gardens in need of a revamp.

Dimmock said, "Everyone loves to visit a good beer garden . However, there’s nothing worse than having to put up with poorly maintained furniture or shoddy surroundings."

The winner will receive a beer garden makeover, carried out by Dimmock, Ronseal and a team of landscapers.
