A battle over the price of red roses has broken out across UK supermarkets, with customers at both Tesco and Asda now able to pick up two dozen roses for as little as £4.
With demand for flowers at its highest on Valentines Day, the retailers have slashed the prices of their roses in an attempt to undercut specialist florists .
A dozen long-stem Grand Prix red roses can fetch over £100 during the busiest time of the year from independent traders.
The UK’s top two supermarket chains lead the way, with Asda selling a dozen red roses for just £4 and Tesco offering the flowers for £4.75.
Shoppers at Morrisons can pick up the roses for £4.99, while Sainsbury's has restricted customers to its own Fairtrade brand, priced at £10 for 12.
However, a spokesman for the Flowers and Plants Association said: "Selling red roses for the equivalent of £2 a dozen must be a loss-leader."
"It is like a meal. At one end of the scale you will get Burger King and at the other end Gordon Ramsay ."
