This year’s Mothers Day shoppers are expected to generate £1.6 billion for UK retailers, an increase of 6 per cent on 2007, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
Using supermarkets and convenience stores data from research firm Nielsen, the BRC predicts that flowers will continue to be people’s number one gift choice, with Mother’s Day flower sales totalling £230 million.
In addition, £85 million worth of greeting cards are expected will be sold and shoppers are also expected to buy £65 million worth of chocolate, with assortment boxes being the most popular selection.
BRC director-general, Stephen Robertson, commented: "Little more than a fortnight after Valentines Day, millions of us will be with our mums on Sunday showing how much she's appreciated."
"With an early Easter too, three celebration days in quick succession presents a supply and restocking challenge for retailers as they try to keep up with whether customers want hearts, rabbits, roses, pot plants or chocolate eggs," he added.
Nielsen revealed that more greeting cards and cut flowers are sold for Mothering Sunday than for Valentine's Day, with 8 per cent of annual flower sales made in the two weeks leading up to Mother's Day .
"With purse strings tight, competition will be even tougher this year. There will be some good deals for customers wanting to make their mothers feel special," said a spokesperson for Nielsen.
