Botanic Garden Wins Lottery Award

Thu, 20 Sep 2007

The National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthenshire has been named the UK's favourite Lottery-funded environmental project in the 2007 National Lottery Awardsclaiming a £2,000 cash prize in the process.

The Botanic Garden was the only Welsh representative in any of the seven categories, but took the public vote and was awarded with a winner’s trophy at the ceremony shown live on the BBC on Saturday.

Director Kevin Lamb said: "We are absolutely thrilled to win this award and would really like to thank everyone who voted for us."

"Winning will have an amazing impact on everyone at the project - this is a great way for us to thank all those who have been involved and helped us to make the most of our Lottery funding ."

"The funding has allowed us to develop and conserve these fantastic gardens which are enjoyed by the whole community," he added.

Celebrity Lottery Environment ambassador, Craig Doyle, said the National Botanic Garden of Wales received an overwhelming response from the public.

"After spending a day there I can see why they pulled in all those votes," he said.

"The Garden is a wonderful example of how Lottery funding has really made a difference to the local community and beyond. I am delighted to have presented them with the Best Environment Project award ."

In 2004 the Garden, dedicated to the research and conservation of biodiversity, was within hours of calling in administrators, but has since seen a turnaround and a rise in visitors.

The National Botanic Garden of Wales saw off competition from the Slimbridge Bird haven in Gloucestershire and the Dunes Coastal Park in the Outer Hebrides, to the award .
