Two florists in Oxfordshire have seen a recent boom in business following their gold nominations in a nationwide florist competition .
The Flower Workshop in Wootton, near Abingdon and Rosa Floral Designs in Witney are among the 24 nationwide florists in the running to be named Britain's Flower Shop of the Year after receiving a Gold Award for Excellence in a contest run by the Flower Council of Holland .
Caroline Barry, co-founder and owner of the Flower Workshop, said: "It's hard to imagine that we've blossomed from near novices when it comes to flowers to running a quality business recognised by the industry."
"We're thrilled but know we'll be up against some other very good florists around the UK competing to be in the last four from which the national champion will be picked," she added.
The flower business has grown from supplying individual local customers to providing special bespoke designs and arrangements for organisations such as Oxford's Randolph Hotel .
Rosa Ashby, co-founder of Rosa Floral Designs, said: "This is amazing. We worked extremely hard to win it, and our hard work has paid off and the gold award has made it all worth while."
"The message from these awards is to make people aware that florists have better quality and value than supermarkets ."
The two businesses will now have to battle it out for the 2007 national florist title and a £5,000 cash prize .Each shop will be required to demonstrate their knowledge, expertise and understanding of retail planning, sales and marketing, business development and improving profitability to be in with a chance of claiming the award .
The eventual winner will be named in January 2008.
