Charity Urges County To Help Protect Garden Wildlife

Wed, 10 Oct 2007

Residents in Worcestershire are being urged by a charity to think about different ways they can help the wildlife in their gardens .

The Royal Society Protection of Birds (RSPB), a charity that protects birds and their habitats, is launching a new activity to inspire people to help the animals that share our gardens prosper.

The ‘Homes for Wildlife’ initiative is hoping to receive support from thousands of people who, once on board, will then follow free wildlife-gardening advice to help them transform their homes and gardens into wildlife havens.

In addition, the RSPB is also staging a ‘Feed the Birds Day’, which it hopes will encourage people to leave tasty treats out in their gardens on Saturday, October 27.

Richard Bashford, from the RSPB, explained: "We want people to let their gardens go a bit wild - just leaving a small area of long grass will encourage insects and provide food for birds ."

"Planting shrubs and building a pond will also be extremely beneficial," he added.

Mr Bashford said people living in all types of housing can do their bit to help. For example, those living in flats can put up a window feeder or install a window box with nectaring plants .

People are also being advised to add a bit of spice and variety to a bird's diet by putting out rice, cheese, fruit, bread or even non-salty bacon alongside more traditional foods such as seeds and nuts.
