Having the wrong sort of plants and flowers in your home can create a bad first impression for prospective homebuyers and put a negative affect on the value of a property, a new study has revealed.
The survey, carried out by uktvgardens.co.uk, showed that UK homebuyers are becoming more fussy when it comes to the flowers and plants that decorate a home they might be interested in.
The most unpopular choices were fast-growing plants such as Ivy (67 per cent) and Laylandii (71 per cent), which topped the poll of those that would deter most people from buying a home .
In third place came Pampas grass with 55 per cent, thanks to its unattractive old fashioned looks and shooting stems .
Surprisingly both magnolias and geraniums, which were regarded as home favourites not long ago, also featured in the top 5, with more than a third of respondents choosing them as old-fashioned flowers .
The survey also revealed that garden features could also affect a buyers response. Just under 70 per cent reported they would react negatively to garden gnomes, and over half said they would be put off by any pet cemeteries being situated in the back garden .
