The summer season has gone and the flowers too are now fading. But you can still keep the beauty of your garden flowers to brighten up winter days.
Many flowers can be air dried by using different methods. Flowers of choice for drying are starflowers, daisies, celosia, babys breath, statice, and annual ornamental grasses.
The first step in drying is to remove all the leaves and find a room that is fairly dark with good ventilation.
Some flowers that have stiff stems like bells of Ireland can be put in a glass jar or a vase until they dry. Soft stemmed flowers should be bundled loosely and hung upside down from a nail or hook. Another way is to staple a large square of chicken wire to a wooden frame then hang the flowers through the holes.
A good method of drying leaves is place then in a vase and they will dry naturally.
Another way to dry flowers is by using fine white sand. This can be purchased from DIY stores and some childrens toy stores. An inch thick layer of sand should be placed in a strong plastic box or wooden box. Place the flowers on the sand base and gently sprinkle some more dry sand on top of and around the flowers until they are covered. Leave the container uncovered and leave for three weeks then see if they have dried out.
