Brightons Royal Pavilion

Tue, 20 Jun 2006

Brighton is famous for being a diverse and cosmopolitan town as well as for its wonderful coastal location - a great place to escape to.

The Royal Pavilion has one of the few authentic Regency gardens left in the UK . The gardens were restored in the mid 1980s and the style created then is what remains today.

The gardens are tended to by one full-time gardener and a group of part-time volunteers who work there two days a week.

The past 200 years has seen the style of the gardens change, each era bringing a new look to the gardens. The Regency era faded giving way to the Victorian and large displays of bedding plants which were adored by visitors. However this proved difficult to maintain as costs were high. The flower beds had to be covered by easy-care lawns and large trees .

However the Prince Regent would still be able to recognise his garden today. Native plants grow side by side with pre-1830 cultivars. Plants such as Arbutus, various roses, Paeonia, Acanthus and Lavatera were introduced as these were on the original plant list. The winter months see evergreen shrubs giving some structure and in the summer hollyhocks looking like spires and minarets.

Brighton Town Commissioners purchased the Royal Pavilion in 1850 with a full structural restoration taking place in 1980.

In 1987 much damage was caused by the Great Storm. This then lead to a restoration plan to go ahead. The work was completed in 1991.
